If you are under the age of 18 and want to have an abortion in Pennsylvania, the state law requires that you have the consent of a parent. If you cannot or do not want to involve a parent, you can go through a process called Judicial Bypass. A judicial bypass allows you to ask a judge to declare you mature enough to make your own decision about having an abortion. Although this may seem complicated or frightening, it is a fairly simple process and our staff will walk you through each step.
First, you will need to schedule two appointments at our clinic. At the first appointment you will complete paperwork, have lab work done, and then meet with a counselor. The counselor will discuss your options with you, help you explore your feelings about your decision, explain the procedure and address any of your questions or concerns. You will then have an ultrasound and exam by the doctor and receive information required by the state. The counselor will then help you complete the paperwork needed for court.
Your second appointment will involve going to court to meet with the judge. You will have a court appointed lawyer to represent you and to protect your rights. There is no charge for this service. After meeting with a judge, you’ll return to the clinic for the abortion.
